Niaouli is a member of the tea tree family. It is a large evergreen tree native to Australia but is also found in New Caledonia, the French Pacific Islands and other tropical regions such as Madagascar. Niaouli essential oil is steam distilled from the tree's aromatic leaves and young twigs.
Niaouli essential oil has strong antibacterial and antiseptic properties and the Australian Aborigines have long used decoctions of the tree's leaves to treat a wide range of ailments from aches, pains, wounds and insect bites through to respiratory problems and other infections. Niaouli was also used in French obstetric wards because of its antiseptic properties. Today Niaouli is still used in antiseptic pharmaceutical products such as toothpaste, cough sweets, mouth sprays and gargles.
This is very liquid, and is pale yellow which can become dark yellow (depending on the copper content of the soil and which can be traced in the oil). It has a strong hot smell, very balsamic with a note of camphor. It is similar to cajuput in aroma and therapeutic properties.
