Historically, this was an important ingredient in the anointing oils of the Christian faith. It was combined with olive oil and used for blessing by a bishop and used as a chrism. Myroxylon genus was originally described in 1753 by Linnaeus, such description was made using a specimen collected in the province of Cartagena and named it as Toluifera balsamum. It was established firstly by Linnaeus filius in 1781, when he described Myroxylon peruiferum based on a specimen collected by Mutis in South America.

Peru Balsam Essential Oil finds usage in the cure of bronchitis, cold, cough, eczema and the flu. Aromatherapists specially favor it for its positive effect on chapped skin and sensitive skin. It is also an effective remedy for poor circulation, rashes, nervous and stress disorders. It has also been believed that it promotes epithelial cells growth. Balsam of Peru also has some medicinal uses too. It is used in products and creams for dry socket, hemorrhoids, toothache, dressings for wounds as it is a good antiseptic, diaper rash ointment and in cough medicine.
