Guaiacwood essential oil is extracted by steam distillation process from the broken wood and sawdust of the plants. Guaiacwood is an ornamental evergreen tree with pretty rich blue flowers and the trunk is greenish-brown in color. It is traditionally used for treating rheumatish and rheumatoid arthritis, gout and venereal disease.
The tree is also called Lignum vitae which means "tree of life". The tree contains rich supplies of fats and resins which make it hard and impervious to water. It was used for ornamental carving. It was medicinally used to treat syphilis and gout. Bulnesia Sarmientoi Lorentz EX are native of South America. Trees are small and slow-growing having dense crown. The leaves are compound, broadly oval and rounded at tip. Resin obtained from tree is used for flavouring cakes and chewing gum. It is also added to edible oils to prevent acidification. The resin has medicinal properties and can treat chronic rheumatism, skin diseases, scrofula, dysmenorrhea and toothache. The wood is hard, close-grained, tough, dense, and durable.
