Menthol is an organic compound, which is obtained from peppermint or other mint oils by means of stream distillation. These species of mint is used to prepare natural menthol crystals and natural menthol flakes. It is a crystalline substance that is white in colour.
here is evidence that menthol has been known in Japan for more than 2000 years, but in the West it was not isolated until 1771, by Hieronymus David Gaubius. Early characterizations were done by Oppenheim, Beckett, Moriya, and Atkinson.
